What I Like About Netflix So Far

So I can’t say I’m totally enthralled with Netflix, but I am leaning towards switching from Blockbuster. I started this process when I wrote Blockbuster vs. Netflix.

The good:

  • The multiple queues are AWESOME. In theory, if we do it right, this is really going to help us have at least one movie that we both really want to watch at any given time, without cutting me off from The Godfather and the like. :)
  • The service is FAST. Everything is overnight. Blockbuster was often overnight, but more often a two day turnaround. I remember this from when I was with Netflix years ago.
  • The web site is 10x better. Nerds will know what I mean when I say “the Javascript executes in decent speed.” Bottom line is, managing your queue doesn’t create painful waits of 10-12 seconds for the web page to catch up and reflect your selections.
  • I think the “watch now” feature will be cool for business trips. I haven’t done a trip with the free trial, but I’m looking forward to checking out a few movies the next time I’m away, rather than tracking down a video store and spending $5.

The bad:

  • Netflix quadrupled the additional fee to get Bluray movies during the free trial to a whopping $4 extra per month. I turned it off and we’re back to getting regular DVDs. I’m not sure it matters to me that much right now because my TV isn’t new enough to really see the difference with Bluray. But still, $4 when Blockbuster is free? Sorta crazy.
  • They didn’t send me my first pick. I don’t know why, because it said “Available” (often it will say “Short Wait” or “Long Wait” if that title is “busy”). So no clue why it skipped the 2006 version of 007 Casino Royale and sent me a Samuel L. Jackson movie that I was semi-interested in instead. This just reminded me why I quit Netflix years ago: no ability to get new releases (not that the 2006 Bond movie was a new release). Of course, many of you have commented or twittered that you use RedBox to get new releases, and that is a compensating factor that I’m going to try out.

So that’s where it stands. Leaning towards Netflix, but still not sure.
