Season 2 - Episode 3

Derrick Kinney on Transformation: Four Turning Points and What Each One Cost

Derrick Kinney traces the decisions that let his advisory firm grow beyond him: surviving an acquisition gone wrong, giving his team room to lead, and putting his coaching method into client visits he cannot attend.

Derrick Kinney lay down in the middle of an all-hands meeting and asked his team what they would do if he could not see clients for three months. A week later, they gave him the answer he needed: he was the reason the firm could not grow.

He had built the business by working harder. Growing it into something he could sell required learning to lead through other people. In this conversation, Derrick walks through four turning points—and what he had to give up at each one.

What we cover

  • Derrick’s account of the 2008 Dallas acquisition that nearly broke his business, and what it taught him about contracts, trust, and client loyalty.
  • Why doing everything yourself can get a practice to a million dollars in revenue and still put a ceiling on its growth.
  • The team exercise that led to making the business “Derrick optional.”
  • How short, scheduled calls keep relationships with top clients active between visits.
  • Why simpler conversations start with a prospect’s problem instead of an advisor’s features.
  • How Derrick and Contio built his coaching method into the visits he cannot attend himself.

Make the founder optional

Derrick’s team asked him to accept work done 70% the way he would do it instead of insisting on 100%. He agreed. Giving people room to lead helped turn a practice centered on its founder into a business that could expand across Texas and eventually sell.

Stay close between visits

Derrick puts brief calls to his best clients on the calendar. The call is planned for him and a surprise to them. A short voicemail keeps the relationship active without waiting for the next formal review.

His advice: start with ten clients and make the calls this month. The execution can be imperfect. The contact still matters.

Put the method in the visit

Coaching presented the same constraint as the advisory firm: Derrick could only be in one room at a time. Derrick Kinney Elite Advisor Coaching, powered by Contio, puts his questions, visit structure, and feedback into each advisor’s work. His method can show up even when he cannot.
